(From Saturday, May 17)

For what seems like months I’ve been meaning to turn the compost pile or, better yet, get DH to do it for me. I did get about 1/4 – 1/3 of it turned this past week. That doesn’t sound like much, until you see the size of my compost pile. Today, at last, it got turned. It got turned, aerated, wetted, divided, and re-piled (thanks to DH). I took about 1/2 of the compost pile and moved it to the outdoor worm pit for bedding. The compost pile is loaded with worms. I figured I couldn’t find better bedding for the worm pit, and the bonus is that it came already stocked with worms! I laid down half of that compost pile material and then finally added the surplus produce from Thursday’s grocery store visit. This included 11 pounds of rotting strawberries and other assorted fruits and veggies. I covered all this worm manna with the rest of the compost. That bin is good to go! I’m hoping that some black soldier flies will lay eggs in that food, as well. They will only speed the composting process. I’m going to check on the worm pit every few days until most of that food is gone. Then I’ll be ready to add the next grocery store produce throw-outs to it.
